The Self-directed Major Department at Chungbuk National University was established in 2011 with the goal of nurturing talent with knowledge and insight that transcends disciplinary boundaries. The department has been striving to cultivate individuals with creative and flexible thinking abilities capable of solving complex problems in future society by integrating knowledge from various academic fields and fostering a environment for developing new perspectives.

Students in the Self-directed Major Department have the freedom to choose their academic curriculum according to their interests and design their own academic paths that align with their personal interests and goals. After completing the first year, students can choose to major in any field of studies offered at Chungbuk National University, excluding government quota management majors, or can design their own major and pursue it as their primary field of study. To ensure that students can choose a career path that suits them, the faculty of Office of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Education, including the dean, provides systematic academic guidance, which is facilitated through various support systems within Chungbuk National University, such as lifelong career guidance program.
